“What is the most resilient parasite? Bacteria? A virus? An intestinal worm? An idea. Resilient… highly contagious. Once an idea has taken hold of the brain it’s almost impossible to eradicate. An idea that is fully formed – fully understood – that sticks; right in there somewhere.” – Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) from Inception.
What is an idea? Though the quote from the movie may seem very fascinating but the truth is, unless you work upon an idea, the idea fails to stick. It’ll just come and go away and leave no trace behind. Even if you’ve had a mind-blowing idea, it will cease to exist in your consciousness unless you record it somewhere.
Anybody and everybody out there, who is a writer like me, will agree. The more you work upon that idea, the more resilient it becomes, and as a result, it becomes contagious. Why does a speaker’s idea in a conference seem more interesting than the other and seemingly no one can oppose it? That specific speaker had the idea, he has worked upon it, it becomes resilient and contagious.
Why is it that the story of Illuminati from Dan Brown’s novel or JK Rowling’s Hogwarts or Christopher Paolini’s Alagaësia seem so compelling and interesting and fire our imaginations? The author has worked upon his brainchild, making it so full of detail and clarity, that even the most far-fetched idea seems to make sense and spreads like wildfire through the billions of minds across the world! The spectacular amounts of research that goes behind the work in the case of Illuminati or the exquisite detailing and masterful depiction of an entire worldly society from the author’s imagination in describing Alagaësia is something extraordinary and it is something every writer should strive to achieve.
Now the next question that arises is, how do you get the idea? Soon to follow in my next blog post.
PS This post was partly born because I am out of ideas myself to write something and also because I hadn’t posted anything in quite some time. Hope this was worth your time. Do follow this page for more insights.
